Barack Obama is a famous American politician, currently the Illinois junior United States Senator. As of early 2007, Barack Obama is the only African American in the Senate, and he is the fifth African American Senator in history. Having become nationally known since his impressive speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, he has recently announced his candidacy for President of the United States and is seeking the nomination of the Democratic party. While he is not the first African American to run for President, he is popularly considered to be the first African American contender with a strong possibility of winning election.
Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 4, 1961. His father was Kenyan and his mother was from Kansas. Barack Obama's parents separated when he was two; his mother remarried to an Indonesian foreign student and they moved to Jakarta, Indonesia. Barack Obama went to the first half of elementary school in Indonesia; through the rest and during his high school years he lived with his grandparents in Hawaii. Later he would major in political science at Columbia University and receive his bachelor's degree. After graduating from Columbia, he worked for a year in the private sector and for a non-profit organization that helped provide job training to the poor. In 1988, Barack Obama went to Harvard Law School, two years later becoming the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. After three years at Harvard Law he received a J.D. degree and went on to teach constitutional law and work for a civil rights law firm before entering politics.
In 1996, Barack Obama became an Illinois State Senator. Four years later in 2000 he ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives but lost to incumbent Bobby Rush. After his loss he focused on the Illinois State Senate, where in 2002 he ran without opposition. In 2004, he ran for an open seat in the United States Senate. Before this election, Barack Obama gave a galvanizing speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. This speech made him an instant national celebrity. He went on to win his 2004 U.S. Senate race in a landslide victory. In the years since then, Barack Obama has taken many trips abroad as part of Congressional delegations and with Senator Richard Lugar, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and as of February 10, 2007 has officially announced his candidacy for the 2008 Presidential election. As of early 2007 he is considered one of the lead runners, in competition with Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.
Hillary Rodham Clinton is the former First Lady of the United States (1993-2001) and a United States Senator from New York. She is a democrat.
Hillary Rodham Clinton was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 26, 1947. She has two siblings. As a young girl, she was a Brownie and Girl Scout. She attended Maine East High School where she was a member of the student council, the debate team and the National Honor Society. She volunteered for Republican candidate Barry Goldwater in the 1964 presidential election.
In 1965, she enrolled in Wellesley College where she became active in politics. She was the president of the College Republicans at Wellesley. She was greatly affected by the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. and later decided to join the Democratic party. She graduated in 1969 and became the first student to give the commencement address. After graduating with her undergraduate degree, she enrolled in Yale Law School where she was on the Board of Editors at the Yale Review of Law and Social Action. In 1971, she began dating Bill Clinton, another law student at Yale. That summer she worked on Senator Walter Mondale's subcommittee on migrant workers. During the 1972 Democratic presidential primary, she campaigned for George McGovern in the western U.S., and in 1973 received a Juris Doctor degree from Yale.
In 1975, she married Bill Clinton in Arkansas, but kept her given name. They have a daughter who was born in 1980. Soon after marrying, Bill Clinton began his first campaign for the United States Congress and Hillary Rodham Clinton joined the Rose Law Firm. In 1978 she was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the board of the Legal Services Corporation and her husband was elected Governor of Arkansas. He remained in office for the next twelve years. In 1992, Bill Clinton ran for President of the United States and won. He was re-elected in 1996.
In 1993, she was appointed by her husband to head the Task Force on National Health Care Reform. As First Lady she supported women's rights, children's welfare and initiated the Children's Health Insurance Program in 1997.
In 2000, she ran for a senate seat in New York after Daniel Moynihan announced his retirement. Upon her election, she became the first First Lady to be elected to an office. She was re-elected in 2004.
In 2007, Hillary Rodham Clinton announced on her website that she was exploring the option to run for president in 2008 and that she did intend to run for election. No woman has ever been nominated by a major party for the Presidency.
A Rock and Roll icon, Bono started making a name when he became U2's lead singer in 1976. He was an exceptional performer and even wrote songs for their band's album.
Born as Paul Hewson in Dublin, Ireland on the 10th of May 1960, he was raised by his parents well though both came from different religion. Hewson's mother was a Protestant while his father was a Catholic. This religious conflicts influence him in writing songs that touched people's hearts.
On October 1976, Larry Mullen Jr posted an ad looking for musicians for a rock group. This group was later on called as U2 which was composed of Larry Mullen in drums; Adam Clayton in base; and Hewson in guitar as well as vocals. He even wrote songs for the group. He then picked up Bono as his nickname. It originated from Bono Vox, which is a Latin word that means good voice.
U2 made a name when their "The Joshua and Tree" album was released in 1987. Bono became an instrument for making U2's album a hit in the market. His voice and tone was considered rebellious which might have been interpreted as political rage and anger.
In 1991, U2 released another album entitled "Achtung Baby" that includes songs based on the band member's life and experiences. During the band's tour and shows onstage, Bono portrayed different personas, which were appreciated by their audience. He even asked the crowd's participation such as dancing with them or pulling a fan onstage.
Bono and U2 received different awards, which includes twenty-two Grammy Awards (to date), Best Original Song for Golden Globe award and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Bono is married to Alison Steward on August 21, 1982 and have four children named Jordan, Memphis Eve, Elijah Bob Patricius Guggi Q and John Abraham. They currently live in Dublin Country, Ireland.
